Moncton, New Brunswick, is a special place to me, and I’m excited to share some of my favourite things to do in this charming city.

The city’s natural beauty is breathtaking, and the iconic landmarks such as Magnetic Hill and Tidal Bore make it a must-visit destination for anyone looking to explore Atlantic Canada.

In this post we’re going to look at some of the top tourist attractions in Moncton and the best places for you to check out.

Don’t forget to scroll past our recommendations for a little history lesson and some helpful tips for visiting.

Let’s jump right into it!

Check Out the Bay of Fundy Tidal Bore

One of the most interesting things to do in Moncton is to check out the Bay of Fundy tidal bore. This is a natural event that happens twice a day as the ocean tide rises and rushes through the bay.

As the water rushes into the Petitcodiac River estuary it builds up into a meter-high wave. The wave continues to push along the river and makes quite a scene with its dark mud and all of the swells and splashes.

This happens because some of the world’s highest tides can be found right here in New Brunswick. Before the tide rushes in, the estuary is more of a muddy and narrow riverbed.

The result, after the tidal bore, is a 7.5 metre deep river. It really is a phenomenal natural event that’s easy to check out when you’re visiting Moncton.

There’s even a Tidal Bore Park in downtown that offers a great view of the tidal bore. This is something that’s definitely free to do and you won’t want to miss during your visit.

The Hopewell Rocks

Another one of the most famous attractions in New Brunswick and an awesome day trip from Moncton are the Hopewell Rocks.

They’re also known as the Flowerpot Rocks and are rock pillars that have been sculpted by the tides over hundreds of years.

These can be found at Hopewell Cape and visitors will have a number of options for visiting the rocks. The best place to visit is the Hopewell Rock park where you can enjoy an incredible view of the rocks and spend time exploring the area.

There are also places that they can be visited for free, although they’re less impressive compared to the ones in the park. What makes them so unique is that depending on the tide you’ll have a totally different view and experience.

When the tide is low, all of the rocks are exposed and the pillars are standing next to the high cliffs. It can be a great experience walking around and admiring this unique natural phenomenon.

During the high tide all that’s left is the top of the pillars, some of which still have trees growing on top. At this time it’s possible to kayak through the pillars, either with your own or on a Hopewell Rocks kayaking Excursion.

When you’re visiting the Hopewell Cape area, don’t forget to check out the Albert County Museum. This is a unique Museum in Moncton that focuses on local history such as logging and shipbuilding.
